A Chocolate Affair 2012!

A Chocolate AffairTo grow the community’s awareness of fair trade and raise funds for World Fare to expand its inventory of products from disadvantaged people, we will be conducting A Chocolate Affair on Saturday, February 11 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at our downtown Three Rivers storefront at 37 N. Main Street. A Chocolate Affair will feature a baking contest in which entrants will use fair trade cocoa to bake a dessert which will then be judged by event participants using purchased tickets. Anyone is welcome to enter the contest and anyone is welcome to come vote on the day of the event. Other activities will include a bake sale and creative activities for kids.

World Fare, a non-profit, volunteer-run store open in downtown Three Rivers since Labor Day weekend, 2003, sells products that are made by economically disadvantaged people around the world. By creating a market for these products, World Fare is helping people in desperate situations learn job skills and earn a fair wage as they try to support their families and overcome limitations of gender, geography, physical handicaps, addictions and politics.

This principle of helping the poor through just and sustainable job creation is officially labeled “fair trade.” Both organizations and individuals are involved in linking the developing world to North America and Europe through constructive trade relations that benefit the poorest of the poor by giving wealthier nations access to developing world handcrafts. Many of these organizations are faith-based, living out their faith in God by seeing that the needs of all people are met in successful, on-going ways and that the poor have alternatives to the indignity of sweatshops and illegal activities.
